Acute Mental Health for Rural GP's

This activity will provide an overview of key acute mental health issues which provide challenges for rural GPs, with an emphasis on management.

Knowledge and skills related to this area will be enhanced by an overview of acute presentations, including substance-related issues, and the management of agitation and aggression. The assessment and management of self-harm and suicidal ideation, and the treatment of substance intoxication and withdrawal will be covered.

Learning Outcomes

  • Summarise acute mental health presentations to primary care.
  • Distinguish the treatment of agitation and aggression.
  • Recommend appropriate assessment and management strategies in relation to self-harming behaviours and suicidal ideation.
  • Plan the treatment of substance intoxication and withdrawal.
