HealthPathways SA has developed a new pathway that focuses on an often neglected issue; the health of carers. Many people (about 1 in 9 people in Australia) take on a caring role. Carers play an important role in health care and their work is often unpaid, informal, and unpredictable.
Carers are at a higher risk of health problems than the general population. Caring for another person over an extended period can be physically and emotionally exhausting.
The Carer Health Pathway is built on best-practice guidelines and support General Practitioners (GPs) and other Health Practitioners with easy access to comprehensive, evidence-based assessment, management, and localised referral resources, specific to the South Australian context.
"The new Carer Health Pathway, and associated referral pages, are great resources for primary care practitioners. Developed with expert input and collaboration with Carers SA, they highlight the importance of identifying carers and providing them with support opportunistically. The pathway also provides a structured approach to helping carers experiencing stress or burnout, with links to local service providers. Consider using this pathway when undertaking health assessments or GP Management Plans for patients in a caring role, to ensure everyone is well supported."
