Changes to the South Australian Public Health (Notifiable and Controlled Notifiable Conditions) Regulations 2012

Changes have been made to the South Australian Public Health (Notifiable and Controlled Notifiable Conditions) Regulations 2012 which affects medical practitioners, pathology services, and registered nurses, midwives and pharmacists who are authorised immunisers as per the Vaccine Administration Code.

These changes are as follows:

  • Notifiable adverse event following immunisation, respiratory syncytial virus, invasive group A streptococcal disease and Candida auris have been added to the list of notifiable conditions.
  • In addition to medical practitioners and pathology services, registered nurses, midwives and pharmacists who are authorised immunisers as per the Vaccine Administration Code are also required to notify cases of notifiable adverse event following immunisation.
  • medical practitioners will be required to notify cases of RSV where they suspect a person has died from RSV. Pathology services will be required to notify all RSV infections.
  • Rabies and Australian Bat Lyssavirus have been removed from the list of notifiable conditions and replaced with Lyssavirus infection (including rabies, Australian bat lyssavirus and other lyssavirus infection).
  • Kunjin virus has been removed from the list of notifiable conditions and replaced with West Nile virus (including Kunjin variant).

Notifications are reported to the Communicable Disease Control Branch (CDCB) of the Department for Health and Wellbeing except for reports of tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections, which are made to the South Australian Tuberculosis Services of the Department.

Conditions which should be notified urgently by phone on 1300 232 272 (available 24/7) are indicated by a phone icon on the notification form. All other conditions should be notified as soon as practicable and within three days.
