Community Engagement and Cultural Program highlights - headspace Murray Bridge

Country SA PHN Newsletter November 2024

National headspace Day celebrates the profound work we deliver as a youth mental health organisation. We used this opportunity to unveil our new sensory garden project by young people, which YATES founded after a successful grant application.

Our youth reference group collaborated with our cultural program to incorporate and recognise Indigenous culture in their project. This included a mural workshop with an Aboriginal (Ngarrindjeri) artist Harley Hall and some young people across groups such as Yarnspace, a psychosocial group activity facilitated by our Cultural Program and our youth advisory group.

This teamwork fostered connection among young people as they collaborated for a good cause, and part of our aim for embarking on the green space sensory garden is to reduce climate change anxiety and create a space where the youths and staff can take a break and stay connected to country and nature.

Throughout Mental Health Month, we participated in activities that teach our bodies to take a break and think about what’s important. Among other mindfulness activities was the Garden Mural and the garden itself.

Lastly, components of this mural reflect community connection, healing, and resilience while illustrating the need to honour Aboriginal voices and traditions. This event and project recognised cultural presence and perspectives by promoting an inclusive environment and a support system that supports young people.

This service has been made possible by funding from Country SA PHN.
