
This month we take a look at Medical Mental Health Check In, a new digital early intervention service for people requiring mental health support and the Alcohol and Other Drugs Community Consultation.
The Australian Government are establishing a new digital early intervention service, ‘Medicare Mental Health Check In’ to provide free low-intensity cognitive behavioural therapy (LiCBT) to people at risk of or experiencing mild mental ill-health or distress, aged 16 years and above.

In preparation to prepare for this new digital early intervention service, Regional Access (1300 032 186) will cease operations on 18 December 2025. During this transition phase of the early intervention services, Regional Access will provide redirection to the Medicare Mental Health phone service in country South Australia, ensuring people can find support via the Medicare Mental Health network.

During March to June 2025, an extensive stakeholder and community consultation was undertaken in regional South Australia. The purpose of the consultation was to capture communities’ views regarding whether current alcohol and other drugs services meet the needs and preferences of the community, and to identify gaps, barriers and enablers for people to seek help for their alcohol and other drug use.
A total of 355 people took part in the consultation by either completing an online survey or participating in a focus group in: Berri, Ceduna, Mount Barker, Mounty Gambier, Port Augusta or Port Pirie. The consultation revealed that although current alcohol and other drug services in country South Australia are having a positive impact on people accessing services and their communities, some opportunities for improvement were identified.
