Mental Health Awareness Month – October 2025

Mental Health Month is a national event that is celebrated every October and aims to shine a spotlight on improving community awareness in mental health and wellbeing for all.

Each year, the Mental Health Coalition of South Australia (MHCSA) coordinates a variety of events and promotional activities to help communities connect and raise awareness of the importance of mental health. For a list of events, please visit the MHCSA website

The theme this year for South Australia’s Mental Health Month is ‘Connecting When It Counts’, emphasising the importance of meaningful social connection during pivotal moments in our lives. This theme encourages timely and supportive conversations about mental wellbeing, helping to normalise discussions about mental health and reducing the stigma and misconceptions often associated with seeking help.

Country SA PHN acknowledges the stressors that people living in rural and remote South Australian communities face that are unique to living outside major cities. More recently this has included drought and a very stubborn algal bloom, which are adding extra stress to our regions. We also know these regions are full of mateship, long-standing connections, and genuine support for each other.

Mental Health Month also recognises the role that mental health literacy plays in helping to identify feelings and emotions through language in a healthy and constructive way. Mental health literacy can empower people to express themselves more effectively, leading to greater self-awareness and problem-solving abilities.

Taking care of your mental wellbeing is just as important as taking care of your physical health; and Connecting When It Counts reminds us of the responsibility that we all have in supporting, understanding, and looking out for one another. A simple conversation might seem small, but its impact on someone’s mental health journey and recovery can be profound and lasting.
