Country SA PHN Newsletter March 2025

The after-hours programs at headspace Murray Bridge, a service of lead agency iREACH, has benefited from the dedication and commitment of a Ngarrindjeri Elder. Her voluntary involvement has brought invaluable cultural insights and support to young people, fostering a deeper sense of connection and understanding through Aboriginal art, symbols, and traditions. Her plans to support and establish a "Yarn space" further exemplify her commitment to the wellbeing and cultural enrichment of young people in our community.

The Ngarrindjeri Elder has shown exceptional dedication through various contributions:

  • Consistent volunteering: she attends every Thursday evening to engage with young people at headspace. Her presence provides a stable and supportive environment for young people.
  • Cultural wisdom: she shares her knowledge of Aboriginal art and symbols, teaching the young people about Ngarrindjeri cultural significance.
  • Workshops where young people can learn and create their own art pieces, fostering a deeper appreciation of their heritage.
  • Mentorship and support: offering guidance and wisdom to young people and she provides a safe and welcoming space for young people to share their thoughts and experiences.
  • Community engagement: she encourages the involvement of other community members/support networks and other First Nations organisations and Elders to share their knowledge and stories.

Having a Ngarrindjeri Elder volunteer through the cultural program aims to strengthen intergenerational bonds and foster a greater sense of community cohesion.

Cultural enrichment

Through the psychosocial programs young people have gained a deeper understanding and appreciation of the local Ngarrindjeri culture and heritage through exposure to traditional art and stories has enriched their personal and cultural identities. The Elder’s mentorship has provided valuable guidance and a sense of belonging for many participants. The supportive environment has also contributed to improved mental health and emotional resilience among the youth.

Community building

The program has strengthened the bonds within the community, fostering a spirit of unity and mutual support and promotes ongoing cultural engagement and support for future generations. The participation of the Elder in the program has encouraged a deeper connection for young people to local Ngarrindjeri Culture and community.
