Prescribing Palliative Opioids: Ensuring Comfort in End-of-Life Care at home

Ensuring comfort and dignity in the final stages of life is a key aspect of compassionate healthcare, with palliative opioids playing a crucial role in managing pain and symptoms when oral medications are no longer an option. Syringe drivers, or NIKKI pumps, enable continuous infusion of these medications, maintaining consistent symptom control for patients.

However, many healthcare practitioners face challenges in confidently prescribing palliative opioids and using syringe drivers effectively, especially in home-based settings including Residential Aged Care Homes. Factors such as limited training and concerns about opioid over-prescription contribute to this gap.

To address these issues, Country SA PHN, supported by the Greater Choice for At Home Palliative Care Initiative, has developed free online education modules. These modules focus on opioid prescribing and syringe driver use, aiming to boost healthcare providers' proficiency and confidence. Suitable for a wide range of professionals, the training covers essential aspects of palliative care, including end-of-life planning, subcutaneous medication administration, and after-death support.

By equipping healthcare providers with the necessary skills, these modules enhance the quality of palliative care, ensuring that patients receive dignified and comfortable end-of-life care at home. Ongoing education is key to improving outcomes and supporting patients and their families during this critical time.
