Rural Health Webinar Series - Walking the Walk: reducing burnout and improving wellbeing for rural GPs

Thursday 3 February 2022, 7.30pm

Burnout is described as experiencing feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion, cynicism related to one's job and reduced professional efficacy. It occurs when there is a mismatch between the workload and the resources needed to do the work in a meaningful way.

Over 32% of GPs and almost 40% of doctors working in rural and remote areas experience high levels of emotional exhaustion. In this instalment we will consider the systems issues that underpin this phenomenon, but there are things we can do individuals and as workplace teams to care for ourselves and each other.

As GPs we talk to patients about strategies to manage stress and improve wellbeing every day. Yet instituting these strategies in our own lives is much more difficult. In this webinar we will explore the barriers to instituting healthy work and life habits in the context of GP enculturation and workload. We consider opportunities and resources to help us overcome these barriers and improve our wellbeing.
