Supporting young people’s mental health

An enhanced primary mental care model

Early detection and intervention

headspace is an enhanced primary mental health care model, with a focus on early intervention and prevention for young people aged 12-25 who are at risk of, or experiencing, mental health issues.

Centres are designed not just for young people, but with them, to ensure they are relevant, accessible and suitable for young people and their famillies.

headspace centres are also designed to reflect the needs of their respective communities and regions.

Four core service areas

headspace cover four core services areas: mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drug services.

Young people may receive support from: a GP, psychologist, social worker, alcohol and drug worker, counsellor, vocational worker or youth worker.

Youth Severe and Complex Mental Illness

Targeted support to those aged 12-25 years

Early identification & treatment

Youth Clinical Care and Coordination (Youth Triple C) services provide targeted support to young people aged 12-25 years old, with complex needs and/or emerging mental health issues. These services support early identification and integrated treatment in the community, as well as increased access to responsive community-based treatment options for those at-risk of severe mental illness. Locating Youth Triple C services within primary care has the advantage of being less stigmatising, more accessible and recovery-focused.

Program objectives

The primary goals of Youth Triple C is to:

improve access to adequate level of primary mental health care intervention to maximise recovery & prevent escalation; and
provide wrap-around coordinated care for young people with complex needs.

This service is specifically designed to support young people who fit the above description, are deemed too complex for other primary services (inc. headspace), and who may not meet the criteria for state-based tertiary mental health services.
