Delivering Suicide Prevention Services

Country SA PHN one of the twelve National Suicide Prevention Trial sites

National Suicide Prevention Trial

Country SA PHN were very pleased to have been announced as one of the twelve National Suicide Prevention Trial Sites which were established in 2017. The trial has brought significant resources, activity, and funding to areas of need throughout the Country North region of South Australia, including Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Port Lincoln and the Yorke Peninsula.

Responding to local needs

The trial is placed at a regional level to better respond to local needs, and identify new learnings in relation to suicide prevention strategies. The trial has adopted some elements of the Black Dog Institutes LifeSpan model which is a system based approach to the delivery of suicide prevention services, targeting populations identified at a local level as ‘at-risk’.

Suicide Prevention strategy

Initially scheduled to end in June 2020, the Australian Government announced in January 2020 it would provide further funding to extend the National Suicide Prevention Trail sites for a further year to June 2021, encouraging the sites to focus on evaluation and sustainability.

Target Groups

Focusing on at-risk populations

Throughout the trial we have adapted some elements of the Black Dog Institutes LifeSpan model, which is a systems-based approach to the delivery of suicide prevention at a local level. In Country SA we have been targeting three population groups who have been identified as ‘at-risk’. These were selected based on a needs assessment conducted within the region and include:

  • Youth (12-24 years)
  • Adult Males (25-54 years)
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
